Igael Shemtov - Six Early Works and One New
“The Dichotomy between the photograph as a documentary and as an artistic means (a subjective expression), an issue photographers have been concerned with since the medium's beginnings, is visible in this series, which Shemtov began in the late 1990s. With studio photographs that spell an inward gaze and with different compositions created by the unique hanging of each series he attempts to examine his own position as an artist in a medium whose hallmark is objective descriptiveness.(1) Using hyper-realism, which makes us think we see a real object, and, on the other hand, enormously enlarged images of this object, the artist meanders within the limits of the medium as both documentary and artistic tool.” (2)
Shemtov's photographs emphasize his commitment to a serious, intensive examination of reality, a commitment expressed in his unique angles, evoking questions about the meaning of "ontological" and "factual" vs. photographic, and choosing to deal with distinct formal thematic through the lesser, unraveled, torn, seemingly unimportant margins of reality. The exhibition "six early works and one new" opening on Thursday, 4.6.09 at Dollinger gallery attempts to provide "the other side" in Shemtov's artistic work .
Among the works exhibited:
This exhibition, together with the one concurrently showing in the Open Museum for Photography in Tel Hai(3) allow for a wide perspective of the entirety of Shem Tov's artistic work, which is characterized by his total dedication and stellar use of the photographic medium.
