NEUES SEHEN - Young Israeli Art - 23/11/2008 - 15/02/2009
The joint exhibition of the Städtische Galerie im Buntentor and the Syker Vorwerk - Centre for Contemporary Art presents 28 young artists and gives an impression of the exceedingly vivid and varied Israeli art scene. The title not only refers to the fact that young Israeli art is still quite unknown in Germany, but alsoto the diverse strategies with which the young artists express their own views about their land andsociety. Today the various offerings of the global pop and youth subcultures combine with traditional identity patterns of the Israeli society to create new possibilities of identity and lifestyle. This development is also reflected in the works of art too. Many artists examine how history and contemporary politics are mirrored in Israeli daily life, architecture or landscape. Moreover, questions of identity and individuality in times of social change are essential components of many works shown at the exhibition.
